The practice of pediatrics . f a guarantee that immunityhas been conferred. It should pass through the five stages in definiteorder. Any marked variation from the normal course casts suspicionupon the adequacy of the vaccination. A condition known as the raspberry excrescence sometimes takesthe place of the ordinary vaccination sore. It rises out of the normalskin and is usually of a dark-red color and of slightly lobulated appear-ance. It is not sore and does not discharge pus. It usually disappearsafter two weeks, but occasionally persists for several months. It ISsupposed to be due to weak virus, or to virus containing some particularform of bacterium. It does not confer immunity. As a rule, the vaccination sore is the only lesion which occurs on theskin, but sometimes secondary pustules appear about the primary soreLess frequently a generalized eruption occurs and the child may beactually ill. This is sometimes pustular and resembles other times the eruption consists of dusky, mottled patches or a. Vaccine vesldeou ninth day, showing pro-nounced areola. (Welch and Schamherg.) VACCINIA 549 rose-colored eruption which continues for two or three days and isfollowed by slight desquamation. I once saw a case in which a pro-fuse eruption on the trunk and neck appearing eight days after vaccina-tion consisted of large, oval blotches of deep-red color, surroundedby a lighter areola which shaded off into normal skin. Secondarypustules are not infrequently caused by inoculation by the finger-nailsfrom the primary sore. Constitutional Variations.—A vaccination may be efficient even with-out the constitutional symptoms. This is not uncommon in character of the sore, not the general symptoms, should be theguide. On the other hand, severe symptoms may occur without modify-ing the result. Complications.—The various complications of vaccinia and the timeof their occurrence are thus classified by Acland: During the firstthree days, erythema, urticaria
