A fragment of an earlier form, withpointed base, has traces of the clay which formed the inner mould,the interstice having originally been filled by a wax model. To the rigJit are weapons, some of which are highly ornamented,one short sv^ord having gold plates attached to the edges of thegrip. The swords aie for the most part earlier than those inthis country, and have complete metal grips, while the blade isnot ordinarily leaf-shaped, but straight or tapering. Those withthe handle in one piece with the blade but with flanged edgesonly (cf. pi. VIII) are comparatively late, while the perfect speci-men of the antennae type (fig. 110) belongs to the Hallstatt period.
