Healthy cervical smear. Light micrograph of healthy squamous epithelial cells from a smear test. A cervical smear, or pap test (after the papanicolaou used to stain the slides), is a tissue specimen scraped from the neck or cervix of the womb which is then stained and examined under a microscope. The test is used to look for for abnormalities which may indicate cancer or infections.
