FIRE EXTINGUISHER. Grinnel sprinkler type. Eachsprinkler is calculated to supply an area of 100 feet. The valve, a leaden disk affixedto the center of alarger disk of brass,is held up againstthe valve orifice bya system of twocurved levers, thelower of which issecured by fusiblesolder at its lowest, point to a lightmetal frame. The valve seat is itself made elastic by the device offixing it in the center of a diaphragm of thin, hard metal, perforatedfor that purpose, and the pressure of the water upon the diaphragmkeeps it tight against the valve. The larger disk attached to the valvedisk serves as a deflector. When the solder is melted, the levers ilyapart, and the valve and deflector drop about /. inch, leaving spacefor the water to escape. It dashes against the disk, which is notchedand slightly dished at its edges, and is then deflected upward in spraytoward the ceiling. 322.
