I want to take you first over West-ern Oregon Soils, taking the CascadeIMountains as the dividing line. All ofEastern Oregon is volcanic ash soil. Itruns from sand to coarse gravel and thealluvial soils. The Grand Ronde Valley is in a stateof alluvial soil, w^liich is very fertile. Un-der these conditions, one will have themost success after a very rainy season. Freewater, near Walla WallaValley, has about as much fruit land as the Hood River Valley, butbecause there have been only small orchards there Avith about fifteenor twenty varieties in one orchard, we have not heard so muchof it. The greater part of the soil is volcanic ash, which is very sandyand is excellent for pears and peaches. Now comes the Umatilla have an experimental station there and find that the soil will growpears better than any other soil. T
