Lignite-burning power station at night. This is the Neurath power station (Kraftwerk Neurath), near Grevenbroich, Germany. It obtains power by burning lignite (brown coal). This is a low-grade form of coal with a low carbon content. There are six power generating units at this power station, four built in the 1970s and two new ones that have been under construction since 2006. This is the older power station units, with the newer ones being built a short distance away from the original site.
