The polishing and plating of metals; a manual for the electroplater, giving modern methods of polishing, plating, buffing, oxydizing and lacquering metals, for the progressive workman . h the dynamo builder. There are thousands of shuntwound machines now in use; they are still being made andthey give perfect satisfaction when they are intelligentlyhandled, but they would not keep up the voltage under anoverload and something that would do it was demanded. This led to the introduction of the compound winding ofthe field magnets, which is in nearly all of the mew machinesof the present day, and in which an attempt is made to com-bine the merits of the series and shunt windings. Briefly THE PLATING AND POLISHING OF METALS. *5* stated, it consists of a number of field windings tapped on toeach other and all surrounding the field magnets. The compounding of the field coils of a dynamo consistsof both shunt coils as above described and an auxiliarywinding of a few turns of the heavier external circuit wirearound the outside of the shunt coils. When the load on acompound machine is increased the voltage remains prac-tically constant, as the few turns of the external current. Fig. 45. Motor Generator. The separately excited field is shown bythe small wires running from top bar to Held coils. The separatemotor winding of the armature is fed by the larger wires leading tothe small commutator on the right. The tank circuit high in am-peres and low in voltage is shown by the large cables leading fromthe large commutator on the left to the terminals at the side of thefield yoke. This machine is motor and dynamo combined. passing around the field coils serves to equalize or balancethe loss of potential in the shunt coils described above inthe shunt wound type of machine. The constant potentialof compound wound generator is very essential, as it ?a uniform factor to work within the general scheme icurrent regulation under varying conditions of load—a I52 THE POLISHING AND PLATIN
