Regions of the spine. Labelled colour-converted sagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a human head and torso, showing the regions of the spine. From top, these are the cervical spine (the neck), the thoracic spine, the lumbar spine, and the sacral spine. The image plane passes vertically through the centre of the body, with the front of the body at left. The image shows the vertebrae (orange) of the spine, as well as the intervertebral discs (green). The vertebrae are labelled: cervical (C1-C7), thoracic (T1-T12), lumbar (L1-L5), and sacral (S1-S5). The coccygeal vertebrae are not shown. If the fused sacral and coccygeal vertebrae (which form the sacrum and coccyx) are considered two vertebrae, the total number of vertebrae in humans is 26.
