In addition to the common schools and highschools, the government of Virginia makes some provision forhigher education in colleges, institutes, and universities. TheL^niversity of Virginia at Charlottesville was established in1818, through the efforts of Thomas Jefferson, and wasformally opened in 1825. Every boy in Virginia can secure. A VACATION SUMMER SCHOOL at this University his college education without the paymentof any tuition. At Farmville, Harrisonburg, Fredericksburg,and Radford the government maintains normal schools forthe education of women who expect to become teachers. Thegovernment lends its support also to the Virginia MilitaryInstitute founded at Lexington in 1839, the Virginia Poly-technic Institute founded at Blacksburg in 1872, William andMary College founded at WiUiamsburg in 1693, and the Medi-cal College of Virginia at Richmond.
