T IBERTY has always been an enticing word—but a word of uncertaini— scope and the vaguest limitations. A great multitude of ever} classand station has sung its praises; but it has not been a full chorus, for onemans liberty is another mans limitation, and the latter drops out until theparts are changed. But the singers are more numerous, and the volume ofsong stronger and sweeter than ever before—they are catching the spirit of theGreat Master; and, when the liberty to serve others has its proper esteem inour bills of right, the chorus will be full. Men were not made to devour one another—the law of size and appetiteregulates the intercourse of the jungle; but it is not the divine law of humanintercourse.
