1858 colour illustration by the Italian Astronomer Angelo Secchi (1818-1878). The dark area at centre, is the later-named Syrtis Major. South is at top because of the astronomical orientation of the telescope. Angelo Secchi was Director of the Observatory of the Pontifical Gregorian University for 28 years. He discovered 3 comets, produced an exact map of the Copernicus Moon crater, and drew the first colour illustrations of Mars.
