Sign post in Santa F, New Mexico, showing part of the route of the Old Spanish Trail. The trail ran for 700 miles (1100 km) connecting Santa Fe to Los Angeles. The Trail, mostly used fir trade, ran through high mountains, deserts and crossed deep canyons. It was a very difficult route. The trail was used in part y the Spanish in the late 16th century. However it was most extensively used from 183-mid 1850s by pack trains. It is important to New Mexicos history as it established a route from NM to Los Angeles and California.
