Leaves roundish ovate, on long foot- stalks, densely clothed with hairs on the under surface. Female catkins cylindrical. (Willd.) A deciduous shrub. Canada, in bogs, and on high mountains in New York and Pennsylvania. Height 2 ft. to 3 ft. Introduced in 1762. Catkins whitish ; May and June. .Fruit brown.
