Following this treatment, the absence of algae was confirmed by microscopic examination of macerated tissues and of 2- micron sections of paraffin-embedded whole animals. Aposymbiosis was perma- nent. Occasionally, algae reappeared in some individuals soon after glycerine treatment, apparently as a result of incomplete removal of algae. Under con- ditions defined elsewhere in this paper, albinos grew normally when returned to glycerine-l'ree culture solution, and have continued to do so through three years.
