I encountered this barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda: 80 cms.) in typical mode, lurking in the shallow waters of a coral reef. They are voracious predators, catching smaller fish with bursts of speed which can be in excess of 40 km/h. Their fearsome appearance results to them having a dangerous reputation but, as in the case of sharks, they present little or no threat to divers. They have a wide distribution in the tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic and Indo-West Pacific regions. Juveniles usually form substantial schools, while adults are solitary.
