Giotto di Bondone (c. 1267-1337). Florentine painter whose frescoes were a departure from the Byzantine conservatism of contemporary art and rediscovered the art of creating the illusion of depth in two dimensions by means of perspective effects, and reproducing the effects of light and shade in the modelling of the face and depiction of shadows in fabrics and the like. This revolutionary departure from the traditional painting of the early 14c. met with widespread acclaim and opened a new chapter in the history of art.
