In Isa. xxviii. 1, Samaria is called the crown of pride, and herglory is compared to the fading flower of the drunkard. The custom re-ferred to in this passage (and which is mentioned in Wisd. ii. 7, 8), is thatof wearing chaplets in seasons of festivity. Samaria, moreover, was builton the top of a round hill,3 and the fact suggested the appropriate imageof a wreath of flowers bound around the head of the drunkard.
