Eastern end of the Aberdeen Harbour Typhoon Shelter, with a golden barge heading towards the Jumbo Restaurant, Hong Kong, China

The Jumbo Restaurant Complex, decorated in the style of an ancient Chinese imperial palace, was designed and built by Hong Kong magnate Stanley Ho for HK$ 30 million. Since opening in October 1976, the floating restaurant has attracted 30 million visitors. The ornamental barge in the picture is transporting visitors from the Jumbo Restaurant Pier at Aberdeen Promenade. Aberdeen, itself, is known locally as Hong Kong Tsai, which means 'Hong Kong Minor'. Its original name, heung-gawng or 'fragrant harbour', a reference to the export of incence trees to other cities in China, was mistaken by Europeans as the name for the whole island. In 1845 the settlement, on the south side of Hong Kong Island, was re-named after the British Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, George Hamilton-Gordon, 4th earl of Aberdeen.
