Dating back to the golden age of Sri Lankan empires in 1070, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa is a World Heritage Site. Its Vatadage is an ancient Buddhist structure designed to house revered relics of the Buddha. Four statues of the Buddha, facing the cardinal directions, dominate the main platform of the structure.
