Some of the citizens engaged the con-ductor in conversation while the committee entered thecoach and soon located the slave. She was a child, evi-dently about twelve years of age. In answer to a directquestion from a member of the committee, Do youdesire to be free? the child answered, Yes. The girls master and mistress objected to any inter-ference with their property, insisting that she belongedto them and was on her way to Tennessee.
