Salutation Cottages, Winchelsea, Sussex.

The cellar entrance of the end unit of a row of cottages that were once the Salutation Inn, originally a hospice, run by the Grey Friars for pilgrims on their way to the shrine of Santiago de Compostella in Spain. The cellar runs the length of the cottages. Cellars in Winchelsea were used for storage and sale of wines brought from France during the town's prosperous years. In the years of its decline, they were undoubtedly used by smugglers.
