Bamboo ladles at the purification fountain, Mieji Shrine, Tokyo, Japan

Bamboo ladles at the purification fountain. Visitors to the shrine take one of the ladles and fill it with fresh water and rinse both hands. They may also transfer some water into their cupped hands to rinse their mouth. The water is not supposed to be transfeered directly from the ladle into your mouth and you are not meant to swallow the water. The water should not be returned to the fountain, it should be disposed of on the ground next to it.
