There wasno bread in the house, therefore she sent her small boyout to a neighbor and bade him borrow a pailful offlour. It was July, and as there were strawberries inthe fields, another child was sent to pick them. Therewere green peas in the garden; another boy was senton this errand, while she sat calmly down to entertainher friends, as she stirred a bowl of cream into REV. The Deacon and his wife observed the spotless neat-ness of this home and concluded that all was well withtheir son, especially when they were introduced to thesweet young girl who had won the love of their young-est son, so dear to their hearts and so worthy of theirbest hopes. The young couple remained about a year after theirmarriage in the old Dutch house in Albany, whilePhilander taught his schoolboys and studied to preparehimself for ordination. This event was not delayed,for on the loth of May, in the year of our Lord 1798,he was ordained to the diaconate in St. GeorgesChurch, New York, by the Rt. Rev. Samuel Pro-voost
