View from River Viaduct to Union Pacific Railroad Depot and sun setting behind 'The Wrangler' roof sign, Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA

Cheyenne, named after the Cheyenne Indian Nation, one of the most famous and prominent Great Plains tribes, was founded in 1867 at a crossing of the Union Pacific Railroad at Crow Creek, a tributary of the South Platte River. The Union Pacific Railroad reached Cheyenne on 13 November 1867, when the town's population was 4000. The Union Pacific Railroad Depot, a passenger station for the railway, was built 1886-87, and is one of the most beautiful railway stations in North America.
