The English physicist and mathematician Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727). His work placed physics on a new course giving mathematical expression to physical phenomena and permanently altering modern thought. As a mathematician he discovered the binomial theorem and developed the differential and integral calculus. As a physicist he estabilished a uniform system in mechanics with the three laws of motion. However, his best known achievement was the formulation of the general theory of gravitation: any two bodies are attracted by a force proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of their distance.
