Cosmolabe. 16th century woodcut illustration showing a cosmolabe. A cosmolabe is an instrument similar to an astrolabe used to measure angles between celestial objects. This cosmolabe, also described as a 'universal instrument', was designed by Jacques Besson to be used in astrometry, cartography, navigation and surveying. This illustration was published in 'Le cosmolabe' by Besson at Paris in 1567.
