Solitary and self-absorbed - a young boy watches fish in a pond at Pannett Park in Whitby in 1935

A young boy watches fish in a pond at Pannett Park in Whitby in 1935. The boy is George H Blenkhorn, son of George and Kathleen Blenkhorn, and the photograph comes from a Blenkhorn family album. Pannett Park was opened in 1928. The land had been bought by Robert Elliott Pannett in 1902 and was used mainly for orchards, nurseries and market gardens while Mr Pannett tried to persuade Whitby Urban District Council to make it into a park for the good of local people and visitors. It was only when Alderman Pannett (as he had become) died that anything was done. Whitby in North Yorkshire (formerly the North Riding of Yorkshire) is a fishing port on England's North East coast and the River Esk, which flows into Whitby Harbour to join the North Sea. On the east side of the River is the founding point of the settlement, which dates back to 656 AD, and Whitby Abbey, which inspired Bram Stoker, author of 'Dracula'. Captain James Cook, the Yorkshireman who explored Newfoundland, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii, was first taken on as a merchant navy apprentice in Whitby and a replica of Captain Cook's ship, The Endeavour, makes regular sea voyages from Whitby Harbour.
