The vault of the inneraisle has its much less formidable thrusttaken up by the vaults of the outer aisle asfar as the lines of the plan are straight,east and west, and by those of the chapelsas soon as the curve of the chevet ^ means of the double set of flying but-tresses, those within and higher and theouter and lower ones, the thrust of thehigh vaults is carried across the wholespace occupied by the two aisles, and finallyturned over to the upright piers whichthemselves serve also as buttresses for theouter aisle.
