The new ci\il building is elaborately furnished in all thingsnecessary to the making of successful engineers. Besides pos-sessing an exceptionally fine building, the department also hasat its command the finest instruments and general equipmentto be had, and the force of instructors is as good as that of anydepartment in the university. It is well known that a civil engineer must necessarily leada rough life, as he must subject himself to the rigors of anorthern winter or to the fevers of Ianama. lUit these are itemsof small consideration comi)arcd to the treatment that he hasreceived at the hands of some of the faculty.
