Ever since John Tomes* drew attention to the peculiar fact that thedentinal fibers stopped short of the cementum, special attention hasbeen paid to this region of the dentine, since it is also known to bemore sensitive than the rest of the dentine. This hypothesis does not find foundation in the region of the neck,where bifurcation of dentinal fibers are often missing or are is only a uniformly granular layer visible in unstained andground specimens between the surface of the dentine and the terminalpoints of the dentinal fibers.
