No trouble has been experienced in thedrop in temperature due to the expansion of the gaswhen it is released from the station storage cylinder. Test runs made by a bus under average conditions ata schedule speed of 9 showed that a distance of25 miles can be covered per 1000 cu. ft. of gas. An im-portant feature in the use of coal gas is its cleanliness, which makes for clean pistons and cylinders, and elimi-nates injector troubles and starting difficulties in coldweather. A view of an omnibus of the Scottish MotorTraction Company operating in Edinburgh is repro-duced to show the arrangement of the gas holders. .. VALVE FOR LIMITING FORCEAPPLIED IN BRINELLMACHINE Reducing the Time Element inHardness Tests French Engineer Improves Brinell Apparatus Permit-ting Tests to Be Made in Ten Seconds In the issue of the Electric Railway Journal forJune 26, 1915, page 1201, W. L. Allen described methodsof testing gears for hardness, etc. He explained theprinciple of the Brinell machine for testing hardness, and a reproduction of aphotograph of the machinewas used by way of illustra-tion. The issue of LeGenie Civil for Oct. 20, 1917,page 265, contains a reportof an important improve-ment in the Brinell appar-atus which has successfullyreduced the length of timerequired to make an accu-rate test with that machinefrom five minutes to ten sec-onds. It is not to be in-ferred that in practicalwork it has been possible toallow as long as five minutesfor each test, hence the re-sults secured in practice have probably less accuracy, say by 5 to 10 per cent, than when made in the laborato
