The Supermarine Spitfire Mark XVI had an American built Packard version of the Merlin 66 known as the Merlin 266 with a four bladed airscrew was fitted. Of the 1,054 produced, they were mostly used in the fighter-bomber role in Europe. The illustrated model was apparently a gift to King Tupou of Tonga. The British single-seat fighter aircraft was used by the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries before, during, and after World War II. It was the only British fighter produced continuously throughout the war, albeit in many marks (versions).
