Sarongs ornative loin cloths are made of light weightcotton, a material specially well adapted forthe process of wax-resist printing, as the hotwax penetrates the fiber freely and easily. Cot-ton can be dyed beautiful and permanent colors, and moreover it gets an unusually beautifultexture from the handling necessary in thedye process. The texture it finally acquiresthrough the application of dye and the wax re-sist, has somewhat the effect of velvet in colorquality and tone. Where the original color ofthe unbleached cotton appears in any pattern,it has the look of old parchment. This is be-cause the wax of the resist is never completelyremoved from the fiber of the material and addsdepth of tone to its color and texture. The sarong in the illustration
