A, 27th Indiana Volunteers, had his leftfemur fractured by a musket ball, at the battle of Antietam. on September17,1802. He was admitted to Hospital No. 1, at Frederick, Maryland,where Bucks apparatus was applied. Nine months subsequently, he wasremoved to Baltimore. There were numerous abscesses, and the patientunderwent two operations for the removal of necrosed bone. On Septem-ber 7, 1803, he was discharged the service, with the limb greatly received a pension, and was employed in the Interior to recurrence of abscesses he was admitted to Providence Hospitalin the autumn of 1807, and on November 11th, the limb was amputated inthe middle third by Dr. D. W. Bliss. The wound healed well, and a pho-tograph was taken at the Army Medical Museum on January 9, 1808, atwhich time the stump was firm and healthy. The specimen,
