Church of San Felice in the archaeological area of Balsignano, town of Modugno, Bari province, Puglia region, southern Italy - 10th century
The ancient hamlet of Balsignano keeps the ruins of the most ancient Neolithic settlement in Low Murgia. In the area surrounding Modugno and Bitritto, between two lame (type of gullies typical of Puglia), there is the fortified hamlet of Balsignano, located South- East of the town centre. Ancient documents dating back to 962 testify to its presence and probably there was a Basilian settlement, destroyed by the Saracens and rebuilt in the 11th century. Two squared towers and the churches of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli and of San Felice, a wonderful example of Romanesque art, decorated with byzantine motifs, are the only evidence left of the old hamlet. In the 90s, in the area surrounding Balsignano they found almost 10,000 finds dating back to the 6th century BC: this archaeological site, more or less two hectares wide, is considered the oldest Neolithic site in the Low Murgia.
