I SHALL not trouble the reader with alearned dissertation on the varieties of theOak, intending to confine myself chiefly to thenotice of remarkable trees which I have myselfseen. The British Oak is indigenous to thecountry, and there are two distinct varieties—some botanists have called them species—namely, Ouercus Robur var. pedunculata, andQ. R. var. sessiliflora. In the former the acornsare on fruit-stalks, in the latter they are forms are common. Mr. Grigorsays, in his Arboriculture, that the pedunculatais the more common tree both in natural andplanted woods throughout Britain. I observedthat the acorns of the Royal Oak at Boscobel,of the Cressage Oak near Shrewsbury, and otthe Swilcar Lawn Oak in Needwood Forest arestalked. The leaves 01 sessiliflora are long, the acorns inclusters ot two or three ; the timber is less close-
