Lycee Joseph Marie Jacquard, Caudry, France. Architect: Lucien Kroll, 2000. View of schoolyard from south to west with polygonal

The design of the Lycee Joseph Marie Jacquard was the result of a competition to create a school that met strict criteria set out by the French government’s HQE (High Quality Environment) department. These range from reducing the embodied energy within the building right through to re-use and recycling of materials when the building reaches the end of its life. The architect felt it was important not to focus entirely on environmental aspects and took time to consider the psychological aspects associated with school design too. The result is a complex organisation of buildings, each part of which has been scrutinised for its environmental credentials.
