Parapets were added and the deck remodeled to provide for highway service 1873. The design and construction was under the supervision of Capt. Montgomery C. Meigs, then Chief Engineer of the entire Washington Aqueduct project. He was promoted to Major General July 5, 1864 for distinguished and meritorious service during the Civil War. State: Maryland.
