Itlays four or five eggs,and has two broods inthe year. The progressivemethod by which theyoung-ones are intro-duced to their properhabits, is very first, but not with-o u t some difficulty,emerge from the shaft: for a day or two they are fed on the chimney-top ; and then are conducted to the dead, leafless bough of someneighboring tree, where, sitting in a row, they are attended by theparents with great assiduity. In a day or two after this, they arestrong enough to fly, but they continue still unable to take their ownfood. They therefore play about near the place, where the dams arewatching for flies; and, when a mouthful is collected, at a certainsignal, the dam and the nestling advance, rising towards each other,an
