The double-tailedlion, so far as Mr Rae Macdonald is aware,is elsewhere unknown in Scottish heraldry, andseems to point to an English origin. Couldthese stones have any connection withAlexander de Montfort, Sheriff of Elgin,who in 1263 disbursed the sum of £15, 10s. 2d. In this connection the Assistant Keeper,British Museum, writes me : The de Montfort family (Earls ofLeicester) bore gules, a lion rampant tail forked, argent. Accordingto some descriptions the tail was a double tail (not forked), butthere is often confusion as to this difference. There are many otherfamilies mentioned inPapworth, bearingdouble - tailed lionsrampant, but theconnection you men-tion of a de Montfortwith Elgin in 1263certainly points tothe stone bearing thearms of this far as I can seenone of Simon deMontforts sons wasSheriff of Elgin ; butin 1263 this familywas at the height ofits fortunes and sucha. post might havebeen given to a col-lateral.
