In the centre of the park is the iron works of Thyssen company in Meiderich closed down in 1985. In the course of the International Construction Exhibition the Emscher Park, IBA, has been transformed from an industrial area into a leisure park and venue. ExtraSchicht, The Night of Industrial Culture, an annual cultural festival, takes place at dozen venues in an industrial setting in the whole Ruhr area.
