The weight of the anchors and chain cables is130 tons, and if the cables were laid out in a single line theywould extend about one mile. The tolal weight of metalwork treated in the construction is upward of 9,000 tons, andthe wages expenditure in Birkenhead represents considerablyover £220,000, which is, of course, exclusive of labor in manu-facture of armor plates, forgings, and a variety of fittingsfrom sub-contractors.—The CROMWELLS SMOKE-BOX. to one another. The crank, thrust, and propeller-shafts areall hollow, an 8 in. hole being bored through their entirelength, and they are each forged from a solid steel thrust-blocks and collars are of cast steel.
