Joachim Camerarius (1500-1574), German classical scholar. Born at Bamberg as Joachim Liebhard, Camerarius gained his latinised name from members of his family being appointed chancellor (camerarius) to the bishops of Bamberg. He studied at Leipzig, Erfurt and Wittenberg where he became close to Philipp Melanchthon. He was commissioned by the Duke of Wurttemberg to reorganise the University of Tubingen, and later Leipzig. He translated many Greek classics into Latin, including Homer, Sophocles and Ptolemy, and wrote over 150 books on religious and classical themes. He was known as an intermediary during the Reformation, in which his advice was sought in the attempt to reconcile the Catholic and Protestant creeds. This engraving is from Beze's Les vrais pourtraits des hommes illustres published at Geneva in 1581.
