View from inside the hollowed out centre of the old Yew at Crowhurst with the wooded door, inside a site for tea parties in the 1800's
Rumour has it the Yew is 4,000 years old, possibly making it the oldest yew tree in England with supports to prop up old branches. The trunk bole was hollowed out by villagers with a wooden door placed in it, sometime after 1820, a canon ball from possible civli war 1643 was found inside. Located close to St Georges' Church in Crowhurst. The Crowhurst yew has been documented since 1630 and is one of the ‘50 Great British Trees’ chosen to celebrate the Queen’s jubilee. The church was built early 14 th century, the Yew is at least twice as old as that, most likely 1500+ years
