The Jersey City club, too, began toloom up prominently. Their regattas weresocial affairs, and used to take place atGreenville, N. J., from a tavern called the Idle Hour. After the race of the yachts,a banquet was served, ladies were presentin great number, and the affair wound upwith a dance in the evening. Apropos of THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN YACHTING. 63. ~ 66 FORTUNE, Mr. Ashbury, the Havre (France) regattawas sailed July 12, 1872^ and among theentries were the British schooners Guine-vere and Livonia and the Americanschooner Sappho. The Guinevere was with-drawn, and Mr. Douglass, owner of theSappho, at once withdrew her, declining tosail against Mr. Ashbury. He started,however, fifteen minutes after the Livonia;came up with and ran through her lee, andthen went on over the course, finishing anhour and a half ahead of her. In this year, 1872, it was, that Commo-dore Bennett presented his Brentons ReefChallenge Cup, valued at $1,000, for an in-ternational trophy. This is the cup thatwas won last season by the British cutterGenesta. As there seemed some disincli-nation to entering for it, Mr. Bennett of-fered an extra prize of $500 in case fiveyachts started, to be presented to, and heldby, the winner as his own private proi) only starters, however, were the Ram
