Fortyyears before a provision of the same nat-ure was inserted in the University Actof 1853, but proved abortive. At thistime the college was hard pressed. Anexcellent president had been found in:he Rev. S. S. Nelles, a graduate ofWesleyan University, Middletown; but:he task before him was a heavy college treasury was empty, and:here was no endowment whatever. TheIrastic remedy of issuing scholarships?vas applied, with the result that thirty:housand dollars were raised, while at:he same time the income from fees was:ut off for a quarter of a century. How-ever, under an able and zealous staff,:he institution prospered. A faculty ofnedicine was established in 1854 in the:ity of Toronto, and a similar faculty ofaw was added six years later. The loss. A SUOAR-BUSH, OTTAWA, CANADA. of the government grants in 1868 againthrew the university into financial straits;but the valiant efforts of Dr. MorleyPunshon, who was at this time associ-ated with the Canadian work, restoredthe situation, and a handsome endow-ment of a hundred thousand dollars wasraised. In 1871 the faculty of theologywas established, largely through thebeneficence of Edward Jackson and hiswife; and other handsome donations fol-lowed. In 1857 the Methodist EpiscopalChurch founded an educational institu-tion at Belleville, which was incorporatedas Belleville Seminary. Three years laterit was affiliated with Toronto Universityas Belleville College, the ladies depart-ment taking the designation of Alexan
