Dungten Lakhang at Sakya Monastery, containing relics of successive throne-holders, Sakya, western Tibet, China

This fortress-like monastery complex here, founded in the 13th century CE, is one of the most impressive in all Tibet. Sakya was once the seat of an autonomous and powerful fiefdom, ruled by hereditary abbots.
