Looking north from near Dome Island,of the earthquake hoax of 1868, at which timeit was reported in the New York papers as hav-ing sunk 80 feet below the surface. A gracefulbridge connects it with what was once known assloop island. Dome Island is nine miles fromCaldwell, near the centre of the lake. Seevfrom the north or south, it has the appear-ance of a huge emerald dome, somewhat flat-tened, but bearing enough of the appearance tcjustify the name. This island was purchasedfrom the Stale in 1856, for $100. It is also theproperty of the owner of Recluse Island. A goldmine is in the side of Buck Mountain, near thewaters edge, easterly across the lake from DomeIsland. It Is said that gold is here in paying quan-tities and that platinum is also found. The CalfPen is a notable notch in the rock along shorenear the gold mine. The section between this andDome Island is noted as deep water fishingground. 69. MAP OF LAKE No. 2.
