Ampullary cancer. Endoscope view of a cancer of the ampulla of Vater, the opening of the common bile duct into the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine). The ampulla is seen distended at upper right. This is an adenocarcinoma, a malignant tumour arising from the cells lining the affected organ. Blockage of the flow of bile causes weight loss and jaundice, the accumulation of the bile pigment bilirubin in the blood. The only treatment is removal of the cancer, although if it is not detected early the prognosis is poor.
