The Caledonian MacBrayne car ferry MV Loch Portain crossing the Sound of Harris between Berneray and Leverburgh.

MV Loch Portain was built on the Mersey in 2003 by McTay Marine, and has operated crossing the Sound of Harris on the North Uist to Harris route since then. She can carry 195 passengers and 33 cars. Unlike other ferries of the 'Loch Class', Loch Portain has a water-jet propulsion system to deal with the shallowness of the Sound of Harris.
